The facts of the case as near as can be learned, are as follows: Saturday morning Mrs. Jackman failed to put in an appearance at the usual hour, and one of the children went to call her, but she could not be aroused, and upon investigation she was found to be totally unconscious. Drs. Horn and Ballou of this place were summonned and found that the woman was suffering from a dose of laudanum, administered some time before. Every effort was put forth to save the woman's life, but it was of no avail; the deadly drug had done its work. She revived only once and then asked for "water," but soon relapsed, and at half past eleven o'clock expired. the deceased was in town Friday afternoon, and during her stay purchased an ounce of laudanum at Dr. Horn's drug store, which of course occasioned no remark. It is supposed that the unfortunate woman took the laudanum upon retiring Friday night, and as she did not occupy the same sleeping apartment with her husband that night, her attempt at self destruction was not discovered until morning. Domestic trouble is assigned as the cause of the rash act which leaves four small children without a mother's care. A jury was called Sunday afternoon, and an inquest held, the following being the verdict returned: "Suicide by laudanum." CRYSTAL LAKE Our little town was thorwn into a fever of excitement on Saturday noon by the startling intellience that Mrs. Jackman--wife of James Jackman, a farmer living just outside of town had committed suicide, and this first report proved to be true. Speculation was rife as to the cause, and many expressed their opinions in a very decided manner. It appears that Mr. Jackman has been decidedly too attentive to a certain "grass widow" (a school teacher) by the name of Brooks, and those attentions have been so open that Mrs. J. has had every opportunity to see what was going on, and became so jealous, it is supposed, that she determined to take her own life. A jury was called by Esquire Brink and on Sunday afternoon an inquest was held. The verdict returned was simply, "suicide by laudanum." Mrs. Jackman leaves four little children, who under the circumstances have the warmest sympathy of the entire community. The deceased had no relatives in Crystal Lake, but all who knew her spoke of her as being an industrious woman, good, kind mother and a true wife, and the entire community feel outraged at the cause which led to such an untimely and lamentable end.
